Music Therapy in Improving One’s Health

Music is an integral part of a person’s life from start to finish. In some cases, pregnant women listen to classical music as it is believed to let the child appreciate the sound when he grows up. Also, classical music can be a valuable medium to help people with Alzheimer’s disease. Whatever the purpose is, listening to music prompts that warm and fuzzy feeling that helps you feel better. Its existence isn’t only for mere appreciation, but also a therapy tool that can help patients with their health problems.

Music & Stress Management

Music therapy is used to suffice for the physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of a person. It is said to have originated from veterans’ hospitals during the war. Music was used to reduce, if not remove, the pain that is brought about by their injuries. It continues to be used as a form of medical method because of its effectiveness.

Music Alters Your Mood

There are a variety of songs that you can listen to based on your music reference. Perhaps this is probably the worst kept secret ever, but music can change your mood from happy to sad and vice-versa. It will solely depend on your interpretation of the song. With a plethora of songs that you can choose from, you’re bound to find the right one that will make you feel relaxed. Listening to music makes you feel good because it’s something that you enjoy doing – and you’re only scratching the surface if you have this notion. By listening to music, you can improve your health – physically and psychologically.

How Does Music Therapy Work?

There’s a difference between merely listening to your favorite hits and listening to songs as a form of therapy. Music therapy requires a patient to be in a controlled environment, with a doctor to perform the method of healing.  The idea of putting your earphones on and then listening to euphoria-inducing music isn’t enough to be considered as music therapy. The method must be done by an approved musical therapist. The therapist is equipped with the right amount of knowledge on different areas with regard to music therapy, such as communication, memory improvement, pain reduction, etc.

The Methods that are Used

A series of methods is used in performing music therapy. This is why it was stated earlier that listening to your favorite hits alone is not considered as music therapy. The therapy program is designed to match the need of the patient.  Some of the methods used are:

  • Listening to select songs
  • Dancing that’s accompanied by an uplifting song
  • Performing music acts like those done in plays

You need not to have an ailment for you to undergo music therapy. Although it is commonly used in hospitals, music therapy is also used as a tool to relieve stress from work.

Music Therapy in Hospitals

Patients in hospitals are the primary beneficiary of music therapy. It can be used in several ways; it can allow a patient to sleep peacefully, it can make a patient calm down or it can serve as an extra motivation for patients to help themselves heal faster.
